Preparing for Mass!

The sacristy is a room in the church where the vestments, church furnishings, sacred vessels and other church treasures are kept. It is also the place where the clergy and attendants vest and prepare before Mass and other liturgies. The person in charge of the sacristy and its contents is called a sacristan.A staff sacristan serves the assembly by preparing liturgical materials, maintaining, replacing and setting up vestments, vessels and other symbols of our liturgies, replenishing materials such as bread, wine, candles and incense, and is present at major liturgies in order to communicate with and co-ordinate those involved.

Volunteer sacristans serve at daily and Sunday Masses in order to prepare the church for worship, set up all required materials, communicate with and oversee the various ministries involved (such as altar servers, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and ushers), and to care for all those who come together for liturgy.

Volunteers to the Sacristy Ministry are always welcome. Sacristans may be of either gender and of any age. All that is required is a willingness to serve and an eagerness to learn the flow of the various seasons and rites. If you would like to become involved, please contact Cathy Brauer at cathy@stmaxchurch.org or at 818-991-3915X110.
