The Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion is a priest or deacon by virtue of their Holy Orders. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are commissioned lay persons who have been fully initiated into the Church and are able to receive Holy Communion themselves. Being called to this ministry, one should feel a special devotion to Christ’s presence in the Eucharistic elements of bread and wine and have a strong desire to share that devotion and belief with the community. This is a ministry of service!
Since so many people receive Holy Communion, especially at Sunday Mass and other special occasions, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are commissioned to assist the priests and deacons in serving the community. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (often referred to as EM’s) also take communion to the sick or homebound who are unable to celebrate with the gathered community at the church.
