RESTORATIVE JUSTICE/DETENTION MINISTRY
“I was in prison and you visited me” (Mathew 25:36)
The Restorative Justice/Detention Ministry (RJ) is a ministry of presence. RJ volunteers bring a Catholic Christian presence to the boys (13-18 years old) confined at Camp Kilpatrick , a Los Angeles County Probation Camp, and to the women confined at California Department of Corrections Conservation Camp #13, and remind them of a simple message, “God loves you.” Both institutions are located in the nearby Santa Monica Mountains .
RJ volunteers at Camp Kilpatrick help at mass on Saturday mornings, teach the boys to sing at mass, meet with the boys one-on-one, teach religion and prepare candidates for the sacraments. Volunteers at Camp 13 meet with women there on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for prayer services and craft projects. Personal interaction is the bottom line.
RJ volunteers meet on Saturday mornings at Camp Kilpatrick at about 9:30 a.m. for one-on-one sessions and sacramental preparation. Choir practice for the Boy/volunteer Choir also begins 9:30 a.m. Mass is celebrated at 10:30 a.m.
Medically trained RJ volunteers also assist in a local Tattoo Removal program organized and coordinated by Gene Dowd. Doctors and nurses interested in volunteering for this program may contact Gene at (818)889-5785, edowd@aol.com.
Additional volunteers are needed. Persons interested are invited to contact Jim Graham (818) 991-7878, jamespgraham@earthlink.net, or Ann Brophy (818) 865-1242 (Camp Kilpatrick) or Susan Tomkovicz, susantomkovicz@msn.com 805-527-9839, (Camp 13).
