Confirmation became a sacrament as the early Christian community outgrew the ability of the bishops personally to lay hands on and anoint with oil all those seeking to join the Church through Baptism. Confirmation became the sacrament that “seals” Baptism with the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Catechism states: “Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace: it roots us more deeply in the parenthood of God; unites us more firmly to Christ; increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us; renders our bond with the Church more perfect; and gives us the strength to be witnesses of Christ.”
