Education is a lifelong process from a baby’s first tentative steps to advanced university degrees. Perhaps just as important is the wisdom we receive from everyday living.
If education in our faith does not continue after our Baptism, then we are denying ourselves a look into the treasury of the richness of God’s love.
As we learn about and experience God we begin to appreciate the awesome love and caring God has for creation.
We are all on life’s journey together. Together, through continued education, we grow as Jesus did in wisdom.
Parents, by their love and example are called to be the primary educators of their children. The religious education programs for children that are active in the parish compliment what is first learned and reinforced in the home. As adults we are all responsible to satisfy the thirst we have to know more about God and to deepen our spirituality and relationship with the Creator.
Some people are called to be guides on our spiritual journey. We have spiritual directors, confessors, friends in the Church community, and catechists.
Catechists experience a call to bring God’s word to various age levels or groups. We have catechists who teach preschool, some who prepare children for First Communion, and others who teach our faith to grade school or junior high children. We also have catechists who prepare high school students for the sacrament of Confirmation. Others are called as adult catechists in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), as facilitators in Bible study, or as presenters and facilitators of adult education programs.
For those who feel called to teach there are plenty of educational courses, regular meetings, and personal contact. Each year there are regional seminars and an annual Religious Education Congress in Anaheim where you may attend several workshops over a period of three days. The parish will sponsor your attendance at Congress. The Archdiocese has catechist formation and certification programs available to you. We welcome those who would like to teach or would like to learn more about the religious education programs.
